Handmade Wooden Toys

MP remembers bringing home a school fundraising catalog filled with Russell Stover chocolate, boxed greeting cards, and foil wrapping paper when she was a kid. Her grandparents loved these items, but friends and neighbors? Not so much. So you can imagine her surprise when CP#1’s school sent home the genius Close Buy catalog. The catalog, designed to raise money for Maine schools, features locally sourced foods, jewelry, clothing, toys, and more handmade gifts.

MP dog-eared several pages of the catalog, but one of her favorite discoveries was this beautifully designed, memory game from South Portland-based Merchants Row.

Stylish, wooden memory cards feature Maine plants and animals.

Merchants Row is the brainchild of MECA-grad Mark Marchesi, who creates heirloom quality wooden puzzles, toys, and games. MP is particularly fond of this gorgeous Doryman puzzle:

Mark also created this wooden logging truck for the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine. The truck will be a part of the museum’s forestry exhibit, but we’re hoping it will be available in his online shop soon!

Like what you see? You can find Merchants Row items at Pinecone + Chickadee (Portland),  Sugar Tools (Camden) and Day Trip Society (Kennebunkport).

  1. Oh I DO hope the logging truck hits the open market soon! My 4 year old has been asking for one for months…what a cool fundraiser site. Thanks!
