When Pigs Fly Wood Fired Pizzeria

We’ve always enjoyed When Pigs Fly Bakery in Freeport. Where else can a family stuff their faces with generous samples of artisan breads, decadent cookies, and moist bread pudding cakes?

Given our devotion to the bakery, the team—which also included Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt M, and Uncle J—was curious to try When Pigs Fly Wood-Fired Pizzeria in York. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a golf club. There’s a lush green lawn, ample parking, and a beautiful new building with windows all around. We were thrilled to learn the company store and bakery is attached to the restaurant. So smart! If you have to wait for a table, you can always shop and sample the delicious breads and baked goods.

We arrived at 2:00 p.m. on a Sunday and the restaurant was packed. The kind hostess, who probably heard MP’s stomach rumbling, offered to seat us at one of the high top tables. CP#1 and #2 were thrilled to climb up on the high seats, proving they’re beyond boosters. Mom and Dad Potato were taken with the restaurant’s cool, industrial style, the interesting craft beers on tap at the bar, and the busy open kitchen.

We ordered appetizers of pickled veggies and hummus, and an artisan bread plate with oil, which were quickly devoured.

For lunch, the family decided to try a few different options from the menu. MP, knowing she could sample DP’s pizza, ordered a small plate burger with Vermont cheddar, bacon, and sweet, red onion relish. The kids decided to build their own white pizza with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses. Grandma Cookie opted for the mildy spicy Portugese red chowder with clams, chorizo, potatoes, smoked paprika, and cilantro. The rest of the table chose a Neapolitan-style pizza, which was generously topped with asparagus, tomato pesto, artichokes, baby spinach, roasted onion, and Fontina cheese.

The ingredients were fresh and our meals were hearty and delicious—not unlike the wonderful breads at the bakery. As parents, we appreciated the prize-worthy patience of our waitress while our crew decided on what to order, as well as the quick delivery of our meals. If the team had room for dessert, we would have certainly ordered the cookie sandwich trio, which includes three When Pigs Fly cookies and three different gelatos. We’ll just have to wait until our next visit, which will be soon, judging by the look of this satisfied customer….
