Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

MP is regularly in search of manageable walks she can take with the kids—hikes that give CP#1 and #2 a sense of accomplishment, and that don’t cause reactions like “I’m tired! I want to go back to the car!” That’s why MP likes the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge in Wells.

The refuge is the perfect spot to enjoy an easy nature walk with family. Parking is close to the trail’s entrance (as are the bathrooms) and there are a few picnic tables to enjoy lunch. Just be sure to bring bug spray!

Just one of many lovely views along the trail.

The one-mile Carson Trail is well marked with designated stops along the way. Parents of little ones should be able to manage the trail with a jogging stroller. And if you have a pet that doesn’t want to be left behind, dogs on leashes are also welcome.

We all enjoyed the beautiful views along the way, from winding tidal rivers to ocean vistas. You’ll want to meander and take in the salt air. This is a walk to enjoy slowly.

CP#1 takes a break at one of the trail’s look out points.
