Portland Schooner Co.

We had a lot to celebrate over the weekend: the end of the school year, Father’s Day, plus our friend and neighbor’s 40th birthday. To kick off the festivities, we took an afternoon sailing trip with the Portland Schooner Co. A group of us boarded the Bagheera—a 1920’s, wooden schooner that sails from Portland Harbor into the Casco Bay. The day was perfect for a sail. The sun was bright, the weather was warm, and we were all in good spirits.

The crew invited the group to relax and enjoy the two-hour trip, or if the spirit moved us, we could help set sail. Not surprisingly, most of us opted to enjoy our sparkling drinks and snacks, but a few were confident enough to try hoisting the sails.

We sailed passed kites flying over Bug Light Park, colorful sailboats, Peak’s Island, and Fort Gorges. The adults chatted and soaked up the view, while the kids took turns climbing into the tiny cabin below deck.

Every once and awhile the schooner would tilt far to the left or right, making all of us hold on tight to our seats. The adults giggled like children, steadying our coolers, bags, and each other when this happened. Image

The biggest thrill for the kids on board occurred near the end of our journey. The captain allowed each of them to try their hand at steering the boat. The kids couldn’t believe their good fortune!

We left feeling like we’d all been given a great gift. There is nothing quite like viewing your home state from the water. Welcome, summer! We’re ready for more adventures like this one.
