As soon as the weather turns warmer, our family seeks out walks that are new to us. The Trout Pond Trail to Cascade Falls, which is part of Saco Bay Trails, is only 1/4 mile long and dog-friendly. And since spring is the season when waterfalls run fastest, we thought it would be a great time to visit.
On the trail, you’ll discover gentle sloping hills and moss covered trees. Tall pines keep the well-established path shaded and cool. You’ll hear the rush of the waterfall before you see it, which adds to the excitement. And for the littlest hikers, this short walk has a huge pay off.
On the day we visited, the water ran too high to get to the brook below the falls (MP wished she could get a little closer with her camera), but a rooted embankment provided a natural bridge for viewing.
This historic area has been a popular spot for picnickers, hikers and fisherman since the late 1800s. In fact, according to the Saco Bay Trails web site, the falls appeared in a silent movie in the 1930s. On a trail leading to the top of the falls, which is accessible in the summer and fall, you can also spot a bear cage from a 1950’s amusement park.
With curious finds like these, we’ll definitely be back for a return trip!
