Big Book News

If you follow this blog, you might have noticed our posts have been sporadic for a long time. And while we’re not fond of relying on excuses, here’s a really good one: Mom Potato has spent the past two years working on a book with you, the Cute Potato reader in mind. The book, which is titled “The Maine Play Book: A Four-Season Guide to Family Fun and Adventure” comes out at the end of May, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!

Before we get into the details of the book, let’s flashback 10 years, to when CP#1 and #2 were babies. MP was overwhelmed at that time and getting out of the house, even to go grocery shopping, felt like a challenge. She knew a newborn and a 15-month old would mean balancing nursing, naps, diaper changes and moods, but it never occurred to her how little energy she would have left for the things she loved most, namely reading, writing, cooking and traveling. Deep down she knew, if she was going to thrive as a mom, she had to make a change for herself and for the kids. With Dad Potato’s encouragement, she decided to go on a Saturday road trip to Harpswell with the whole family. Our plans weren’t fancy — we simply wanted to drive out a long peninsula, enjoy views of the water, grab lunch, and get some fresh air.

As silly as it sounds, that road trip recharged MP’s spirits in a way she never imagined. Who knew salt air, a lobster roll and time outdoors could have such an enduring effect? From that day onward, MP made it her goal to take accessible outings with the kids to farmers’ markets, local festivals, parks and beaches. These small adventures gave everyone in our family something to look forward to each week. And they still do.

Over the past 9 years, we’ve shared some of our experiences with you on the blog, and now, you’ll get to learn about our travels all over this great state! “The Maine Play Book” is more than just a guidebook — it’s our personal experiences tailored for parents of kids of all ages. Each chapter focuses on a season and shares our favorite outdoor adventures from the southern coast to the northernmost reaches of the state. You’ll discover local favorites and hidden gems from seasonal fairs and festivals to visiting farms and swimming spots. Along the way, you’ll also find suggestions for family-friendly restaurants and where you can experience more unique local spaces. And if you need some inspiration, the back of the book offers fun day trips in every season.

We will be sharing more book news in the coming months, but if you’re interested in pre-ordering a copy, visit amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com or islandportpress.com. And if you want to be in the know about book events, visit here.
