When there is not much snow on the ground during winter weekends, our family finds ourselves hunting for accessible adventures. We found a road trip to a new-to-us weekend farmers’ market is always a highlight. There’s a thrill to discovering local farms and artisans. All of us enjoy chatting with vendors, sampling new foods, and of course, shopping for all …
Winter Goat Hikes at Ten Apple Farm
On a bright, January Sunday, we visited Ten Apple Farm in Gray for an hour-long goat hike in the woods. Owners Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz and their young daughters—Charlotte, Bea and Sadie—care for a herd of Alpine dairy goats that live in a big red barn attached to the family’s 1901 clapboard farmhouse.
May Celebration: Broadturn Farm
It’s May! Finally. Our lawn is becoming greener, flowering trees are in bloom, and there are daffodils sprouting up everywhere. Last year, to celebrate this greening of our landscape, we traveled to Broadturn Farm in Scarborough for a May Day celebration. MP has long admired the farm for its beautiful flowers and farm-based educational programs. She couldn’t wait to visit with …
Wolfe’s Neck Farm Family Farm Feast
Our dear friends were in town for a few days last week. We celebrated their final evening in Maine at the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Family Farm Feast. The Freeport-based, farm-to-table dinner featured local fare from two of our favorite restaurants, Gather and Frontier, plus music from North of Nashville. We loved the idea of a farm dinner devoted to families, and couldn’t …
Sunflower Farm: Mama Goats and Their Kids
One of the things we love best about our new home is its close proximity to some incredible farms and orchards. The team recently stopped by Sunflower Farm & Creamery in Cumberland to visit with their newest baby goats. Owners Hope and Chris Hall regularly open the farm to visitors, so children and adults can enjoy spending time with the babies. …
Rocky Ridge Orchard + Raw Apple Crisp
Sara Sullivan is a Yarmouth-based, certified nutritionist, who you may have spotted on Good Day Maine. MP discovered Sara’s healthy, family-friendly recipes on Facebook. She became an instant fan after trying Sara’s Mango Coconut Smoothie (made with 1 cup of spinach) for an after school snack. To MP’s delight, CP#2—who is afraid of green vegetables—loved it! Sara recently launched a beautiful …
Wallingford’s Fruit House & Lake Auburn
A fall trip to Wallingford’s Fruit House in Auburn is a Cute Potato family tradition, dating back to when DP was a wee lad. The space has changed over the years—there’s a big, backyard play area, a farm store brimming with toys and food gifts, and more cars in the parking lot. We go to the orchard to buy apples …
Making Ice Cream at Pineland Farms
On one of our first days of summer vacation, the team visited Pineland Farms in New Gloucester to make ice cream. Paula Letiecq, who teaches the class, is a friend, so we were thrilled to visit for the morning. She tells us we’ll be making three kinds of ice cream: strawberry, vanilla, and M&M cookie.
Wolfe’s Neck Farm Spring Festival
The team at Cute Potato has always enjoyed Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport for its spectacular, coastal setting and inspired events for families. This Saturday’s Spring Festival promises to be a treat for all ages. Kids can take part in crafts and games (CP#1 made a beautiful beaded bracelet in the past), scavenger hunts, hayrides along the coast, and face …
Our Favorite Farm Stands: Wealden Farm
If you live in Maine, a sunny, 60º November day is something to savor. And if you’re like MP, the beautiful weather makes for a perfect excuse to visit a favorite farm stand like Wealden Farm in Freeport.
